Do Gift Cards Expire? Expiry Dates, Fees and Regions Explained

· Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: Some do and some don't. In many places, store and app-store gift cards last for years or never expire, while prepaid Visa, Mastercard and Vanilla gift cards carry a printed expiry date and may charge fees that eat into the balance. The card's own terms, on the back, the packaging or the issuer's website, are the only reliable answer, and if you plan to sell a card, sooner is safer than later.

Look at the front of a prepaid Visa gift card and you'll find something a Steam card doesn't have: a "valid thru" date, exactly like the one on your bank card.

That small detail answers half the question. Gift cards aren't one product with one rule. Some keep their value for years, some come with a deadline, and some quietly lose money each month you leave them alone. What matters is knowing which kind is sitting in your drawer.

Two kinds of gift card, two sets of rules

Store and brand cards

Amazon, Apple, Steam, Sephora, Walmart, PlayStation: these can only be spent with one brand, usually in one country. In many places they last for years or have no expiry date at all, and some countries have consumer rules that stop them expiring quickly. That isn't true everywhere or for every brand, so the terms printed on the card or the brand's website decide.

Prepaid Visa, Mastercard and Vanilla cards

These work like a debit card loaded with a fixed amount, and you can spend them wherever that card network is accepted. Because they're real payment cards, they nearly always carry an expiry date on the front. When that date passes, the plastic stops working.

That doesn't always mean the money is gone. Depending on the issuer, what's left may be transferable to a new card, sometimes for a fee. Prepaid cards can also come with other charges, such as a purchase fee when they're bought and, on some cards, a monthly fee after several months without use. If you hold one, read its terms now rather than later.

At a glance

Card type Does it expire? Fees to watch for Where to check
Store or brand card (Amazon, Apple, Steam, Sephora) Often not, or only after a long time, depending on country and brand Rare, but read the terms The back of the card or the brand's website
Prepaid Visa, Mastercard or Vanilla Yes, the date is printed on the card Possible fees after months of no use The issuer's website printed on the back
Promotional or bonus card Often, and sometimes quickly Strict conditions on use The promotion's terms
E-code Same rules as the card it stands for Same as the card The purchase email or the brand's website

Expired, region-locked or used up?

People often mix up three very different messages:

  • Expired. The date has passed. For a prepaid card, contact the issuer named on the back. For a store card, contact the brand.
  • "Can't be redeemed in your country or region." The card hasn't expired. It was issued for another country's store, so a UK card won't work on a US account. It's still a perfectly good UK card, and that's how you sell it. Our guide on why gift card rates differ explains why the country matters so much.
  • "Already redeemed" or a zero balance. Someone has used the code. See what to do when a gift card says already redeemed.

How to find your card's expiry and terms

  1. The front of a prepaid card, where you'll see "valid thru" or "good thru" with a month and year.
  2. The back of the card and its packaging. The fine print usually covers expiry and any fees.
  3. The receipt or purchase email, which shows when the card was bought and loaded.
  4. The brand's or issuer's official website. Type the address yourself instead of tapping a link from a message.
  5. The official balance page. For many cards, the balance check also shows the expiry date. Our guide to checking a gift card balance safely lists the official routes.

Why selling sooner usually makes sense

If you've decided to sell a card, there's little to gain from waiting:

  • Time works against you. Expiry dates only get closer, and some prepaid cards lose part of their balance to fees while they sit in a drawer.
  • Rates move. Gift card rates follow the naira and demand for each brand. They can rise as well as fall, but nobody can reliably predict which.
  • Cards get lost or used by accident. A sibling adds it to their account "to see if it works", and it's gone.
  • Receipts fade. Till receipts are printed on thermal paper, which fades in heat and light. Leave one in a hot car or a handbag through the dry season and the print can all but disappear.

If you'll genuinely use the card yourself, for an Apple subscription or games on Steam, keeping it is fine. Just note the terms so the date doesn't surprise you.

If your card has already expired

  • Prepaid card: contact the issuer on the back and ask whether the remaining balance can go onto a replacement card.
  • Store card: contact the brand's support with the card number and receipt and ask what's possible.
  • Either way: don't try to sell an expired card, and ignore anyone online offering to "reactivate" cards for a fee. That's a scam.

Sell before the date catches up with you

KWIQ buys gift cards for naira, including Visa, Mastercard and Vanilla prepaid cards as well as Apple/iTunes, Amazon, Steam and more. The app shows the card types it accepts and their rates. Frequently asked questions

Does a gift card lose value if I keep it for a long time?

The balance may stay the same, but some prepaid cards start charging fees after a period without use, and the naira you'd get for the card moves with exchange rates and demand. Holding a card for months carries risk either way.

Can I sell a prepaid Visa gift card after its expiry date?

Usually not as a card. Some issuers will move a remaining balance to a replacement card if you contact them, so check with the issuer named on the back before you give up on it.

What does ‘cannot be redeemed in your region’ mean?

The card was issued for another country's store. It hasn't expired, but it only works, and only sells, as a card for that country, so pick that country when you sell it.

Do free promotional gift cards expire?

Often, and sometimes within weeks. Bonus cards handed out with a purchase or a promotion usually have their own short expiry date and stricter terms, so read them the day you get one.
