Found an Old Bitcoin Wallet? How to Check It and Cash Out Safely
· Updated · 3 min read
Short answer: First work out what you've found: an old exchange account, a wallet app on an old phone, a seed phrase, a paper wallet or a wallet file. If you know an address, check its balance on a Bitcoin explorer without entering any secrets. To access the coins, restore the seed phrase or file only in a reputable wallet on a device you trust, move the Bitcoin to a wallet you control today, and only then send it to your KWIQ wallet to sell. Never give a seed phrase or wallet file to a 'recovery' service.
Clearing out a drawer, you find an old phone. Or a notebook with twelve words written in a corner. Or you remember that, back in 2017, a friend helped you buy "some Bitcoin" on an app you've long forgotten.
Bitcoin is worth many times what it was back then, so it's worth checking. But this is also exactly the moment scammers wait for. Go slowly, and in this order.
Step 1: Work out what you've found
| What you have | What it means |
|---|---|
| An old exchange or app login | The Bitcoin is held by that company. Contact its official support. |
| A wallet app on an old phone | The Bitcoin may be in that app, protected by its PIN or a backup phrase. |
| A seed phrase (12 or 24 words) | The master key to a wallet. Whoever has it controls the coins. |
| A paper wallet | A printed address and private key, sometimes as QR codes. |
A wallet file (such as wallet.dat) |
An older desktop wallet's key file, often with a password. |
Step 2: Check the balance without risking anything
If you can find a Bitcoin address (a public address, often starting with 1, 3 or bc1), paste it into a Bitcoin explorer such as mempool.space. You'll see the balance and history. This is completely safe: an address is public, and checking it doesn't reveal any secret.
Never type a seed phrase or private key into a website to "check a balance". That's the quickest way to lose everything.
Step 3: Restore access, safely
Exchange accounts: use the official website's account recovery, and expect identity checks.
Old phone apps: charge the phone and try the app first. If it asks for a PIN you've forgotten, look for the backup phrase.
Seed phrases: install a reputable, well-known wallet from the official app store, on a phone or computer you trust, and choose "restore" or "import". Our explainer on seed phrases covers how they work. Very old wallets sometimes used different formats; if the restore shows an empty wallet but you know there's Bitcoin, the format may differ, so research the original wallet before trying anything else.
Paper wallets and wallet files: these need more care. Use reputable, well-documented wallet software, and avoid tools from unknown websites.
Step 4: Move it to a wallet you control today
Once you can see the coins, move them to a fresh wallet you control (or straight to your KWIQ Bitcoin address if you plan to sell). Old backups may have been seen by other people over the years; moving the coins ends that risk.
Step 5: Check for forked coins
If your Bitcoin was in a wallet you controlled before August 2017, the same keys may also hold Bitcoin Cash, which split from Bitcoin then. Move your Bitcoin to safety first, then check. KWIQ supports Bitcoin Cash too. Our explainer on Litecoin, Dogecoin and Bitcoin Cash has the background, and profiting from forks and airdrops covers the idea in general.
Watch out for "recovery experts"
The moment you post "found an old wallet, can't access it" anywhere online, strangers will offer to help. Nearly all of them want your seed phrase, your wallet file or an upfront fee. Read crypto recovery scams before you reply to anyone.
Step 6: Sell what you want to sell
Decide how much to sell and how much to keep. Our post on taking profit on Bitcoin in naira can help you plan. Then:
- Copy your Bitcoin deposit address from the KWIQ app.
- Send from the wallet you restored, on the regular Bitcoin network.
- Once credited, check the rate and naira amount and confirm. Swapping to naira is free, and you can withdraw to any Nigerian bank.
Keep a note of what you found, when, and what you sold for your records. Check today's Bitcoin to naira rate, then download the KWIQ app or sign up on the web.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check an old Bitcoin address balance?
Paste the address into a Bitcoin explorer such as mempool.space. It shows the balance and history without needing any password or seed phrase. Never type a seed phrase into a website.
I have a seed phrase from years ago. Will it still work?
Usually, yes. Seed phrases follow common standards, so a reputable wallet can often restore them. Older wallets sometimes used different formats, so you may need a wallet that supports the same type.
If I held Bitcoin in 2017, do I also have Bitcoin Cash?
If the Bitcoin was in a wallet you controlled before Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin in August 2017, the same keys may also hold Bitcoin Cash. Move your Bitcoin to safety first, then check.
Should I pay a company to recover my wallet?
Be extremely careful. Most people offering crypto recovery online are scammers. Never send anyone your seed phrase, wallet file or passwords.
