How to Make Your Mobile Data Last Longer in Nigeria

· 5 min read

You buy a fresh bundle on Monday, and by Wednesday the message arrives: your data is exhausted. You didn't stream a single movie. So where did it go?

Most of the time, the answer is a handful of settings working quietly in the background. Fix them once and the same bundle can last noticeably longer. Here's how to do it on Android and iPhone, without becoming a tech expert.

Turn on your phone's built-in data saver

This is the single biggest switch, and it takes ten seconds.

On Android

Most Android phones have a Data saver option. Open Settings and type "Data saver" into the search bar, because the exact menu differs between Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, Xiaomi and others. With it on, most apps stop using mobile data in the background. You can still allow important apps, like WhatsApp or your banking app, to keep working.

You can also go one app at a time: open an app's info page in Settings, look for its mobile data options, and switch off background data for apps that don't need it.

On iPhone

Open your Mobile Data settings and look for Low Data Mode under the mobile data options. It pauses automatic updates and background tasks such as photo syncing. While you're there, scroll down the list of apps and switch off mobile data for any you only use on Wi-Fi. You can also turn off Background App Refresh for apps that don't need it.

Stop WhatsApp from eating your bundle

Busy WhatsApp groups are quiet data thieves. Every video, voice note and forwarded meme can download automatically.

  • In WhatsApp's settings, look for Storage and data, then the media auto-download options.
  • Set "When using mobile data" to download nothing, or photos only. You can still tap any video you actually want to watch.
  • If you see an option to use less data for calls, turn it on.
  • Check your chat backup settings and make sure backups only run on Wi-Fi.

Lower video quality in YouTube, TikTok and Instagram

Video is the heavy one. Most apps pick quality automatically, so on a strong 4G or 5G signal they'll happily stream in high definition and burn through your bundle.

  • YouTube: in settings, look for video quality preferences for mobile networks and choose the data-saving option.
  • TikTok: look for Data saver in the settings menu and turn it on.
  • Instagram: look for the data usage or media quality setting and choose to use less mobile data. Turn off high-quality uploads when you're not on Wi-Fi.
  • Facebook and X: switch autoplay to Wi-Fi only, or off completely.

Music apps work the same way. Download your playlists while you're on Wi-Fi instead of streaming the same songs every day.

Save big downloads for Wi-Fi

Office Wi-Fi, a campus network, a tech hub or a friend's router: whenever you're on Wi-Fi, use it for the heavy lifting.

Make app updates wait

App updates can be hundreds of megabytes each. In the Play Store settings, look for the auto-update option and choose Wi-Fi only. On iPhone, open the App Store settings and turn off automatic downloads over mobile data. Phone system updates are even bigger, so always install those on Wi-Fi.

Watch your photo backups

Google Photos and iCloud Photos can upload a whole week of pictures and videos in one go. Set backups to Wi-Fi only.

Be careful with hotspot

When you share your phone's hotspot with a laptop, the laptop often thinks it's on home broadband. It may start downloading system updates or syncing cloud folders. Mark the connection as metered or limited on your laptop, and pause cloud sync while you're tethering.

Download before you travel

Planning a trip from Lagos to Ibadan or Abuja? Download offline maps, podcasts and the episodes you want to watch before you leave home.

Find out which apps are using the most data

You can't fix what you can't see.

  • Android: search Settings for "Data usage" to see each app's usage for the current cycle.
  • iPhone: open Mobile Data settings and scroll down. Each app shows how much it has used since the statistics were last reset. Reset them at the start of each bundle so the numbers mean something.

Look for surprises: an old game, a browser that autoplays videos, or an app you forgot you installed. Restrict it or delete it.

Choose a plan that matches how you really use data

Once your settings are tidy, your usage becomes predictable, and that makes choosing a plan much easier.

  1. Check last month's usage from the steps above, so you're buying based on facts, not guesses.
  2. Compare the cost per gigabyte. Small daily bundles are convenient but often cost more per GB than bigger plans.
  3. Match the plan to your habits. If you mostly chat and scroll, a smaller plan may be enough. If you stream or work online, a bigger plan or Wi-Fi at home may save money.
  4. Mind the validity. Unused data usually expires at the end of the plan's validity, so don't overbuy.

Dial *312# on any network to see the plans available on your line.

Keep an eye on your balance

Every major network uses the same NCC harmonised codes:

  • *323# checks your data balance
  • *310# checks your airtime balance
  • *312# shows data plans to buy

They work on MTN, Airtel, Glo and T2 (formerly 9mobile). For more ways to check, including in-app options, see how to check your airtime and data balance. On Android, you can also set a data warning in the Data usage settings, so your phone alerts you before the bundle runs out.

Top up without leaving your money app

When it's finally time to recharge, you don't need to hunt for a recharge card. You can buy airtime and data in the KWIQ app, at no extra cost from KWIQ. Pick your network: MTN data, Airtel data, Glo data or T2 (9mobile) data.

A few minutes with these settings can save you real money every month. If you already receive crypto or sell USDT for naira, KWIQ lets you handle your data top-ups in the same place, and swapping crypto to naira is free. Download the KWIQ app and keep your data, airtime and money in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my data finish so fast even when I'm not using my phone?

Apps keep working in the background: updating themselves, backing up photos and chats, and refreshing feeds. Limiting background data and setting updates and backups to Wi-Fi only usually makes the biggest difference.

What code checks my data balance on any Nigerian network?

Dial *323# on MTN, Airtel, Glo or T2 (formerly 9mobile). It's one of the NCC's harmonised USSD codes, alongside *310# for your airtime balance and *312# to buy data plans.

Does watching videos in lower quality really save data?

Yes. Video is usually the biggest data user on a phone, and higher resolutions use far more data per minute. Keeping mobile data on a lower quality and saving HD for Wi-Fi stretches a bundle noticeably.

Is a daily plan or a monthly plan better value?

It depends on your usage. Daily and weekly bundles suit light or occasional use, while heavy users often get more data for their money on bigger plans. Check last month's usage before you decide.
