How to Pay Electricity Bills With Crypto in Nigeria

· 5 min read

It's 8pm, the prepaid meter starts beeping, and the units are about to run out. Your naira account is low, but you have USDT or Bitcoin in your wallet. Do you sell it, wait for the naira to land in your bank, then open your banking app to buy a token?

You don't have to. In the KWIQ app you can swap crypto to naira and pay your electricity bill from that same naira balance. This guide covers how it works for prepaid and postpaid meters, what to double-check before you pay, and what to do if a token doesn't arrive.

Prepaid or postpaid: know your meter first

Before you pay, be sure which kind of account you have. It changes what you enter and what you get back.

Prepaid meter Postpaid account
How it works You buy units before you use them You use power and pay a bill afterwards
What you pay into Your meter number Your account with the DisCo
What you get A token to type into your meter Payment recorded against your bill
Where to find the number On the meter or a past token receipt On your electricity bill

If you're not sure, look at a recent receipt or bill, or ask your landlord or estate manager. Prepaid tokens are usually a long string of digits (often 20) that you type into the meter's keypad.

Who you're paying: your DisCo

Electricity in Nigeria is sold to homes and businesses by regional distribution companies, called DisCos. Examples include Ikeja Electric and Eko in Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Jos, Benin and Yola DisCos. Your DisCo depends on where the property is, and its name is usually printed on your bill or meter card.

When you go to pay in KWIQ, the app shows the DisCos it supports. Check that yours is listed before you start.

How to pay your electricity bill with crypto, step by step

Step 1: Swap your crypto to naira

Open your wallet in KWIQ, for example your USDT or BTC wallet, and choose to sell or swap to naira. Enter the amount. Before you confirm, the app shows the rate and exactly how much naira you'll receive. Swapping crypto to naira is free.

If USDT is your main coin, our page on how to sell USDT for naira explains the rate and the process in more detail.

Tip: swap a little more than one bill's worth. A small naira buffer means you can buy your next token in seconds, without swapping again.

Step 2: Open the electricity option

Electricity sits alongside airtime, data and betting top-ups in the same app, and payment comes from your naira balance.

Step 3: Choose your DisCo and enter your meter number

Pick your distribution company, then type in your meter number (postpaid customers use the number on their bill if the app asks for it). Read it back slowly. One wrong digit means you're buying power for a stranger.

Where your provider shows the customer name and address linked to the number, check that it matches before you go on. It's the quickest way to catch a typo.

Step 4: Enter the amount and confirm

Type in how much you want to pay and confirm. The money comes from your naira balance.

Step 5: Keep your token or receipt

For a prepaid meter, load the token on your meter's keypad. Keep a copy of the token and receipt, either a screenshot or a note, until the units show up. For postpaid, keep the receipt as proof of payment in case your next bill doesn't reflect it.

If a token doesn't arrive or won't load

Most problems have a simple cause. Work through these in order:

  1. Check your transaction history in the app to confirm the payment went through and to find the reference.
  2. Check the meter number on the receipt against your meter. A mismatch explains most "invalid token" errors.
  3. Retype the token carefully. A single mistyped digit gets rejected.
  4. Give it a short while. DisCo systems are sometimes slow to issue tokens, especially during outages on their side.
  5. Contact support. Reach KWIQ through our support page or live chat in the app, which is available 24/7. Share the transaction reference, meter number, DisCo, amount and time of payment so the team can look into it quickly.

If the meter itself shows a fault message, or your postpaid account looks wrong, your DisCo's customer care is the right next call.

Make your units last longer

Paying is the easy part. Making the units stretch is where the savings are:

  • Switch off at the socket. TVs, decoders and chargers on standby still draw power.
  • Swap old bulbs for LEDs. They use far less power for the same light.
  • Go easy on heavy appliances. Irons, kettles, water heaters and air conditioners use the most. Iron in one batch, boil only the water you need, and set the AC to a moderate temperature rather than the coldest.
  • Check the fridge seal. A door that doesn't close properly makes the fridge work much harder.
  • Watch your daily use. Note your meter reading for a few days to see what normal looks like, so a sudden jump stands out.

Stay safe while you pay

Be wary of anyone in your DMs selling "discount tokens" or "cheap units" if you send crypto first. Buy directly in the app instead. And KWIQ will never ask for your password, PIN or one-time codes. If someone claiming to be from KWIQ asks for them, it isn't us.

Bills, airtime and data from the same balance

The same naira balance also covers your phone. Our guide on buying airtime and data with crypto walks through it, the airtime and data page covers every network, and you can check your airtime and data balance afterwards with your network's short codes. KWIQ adds no extra cost for any of these.

Keep the lights on, straight from your crypto

Your crypto shouldn't have to make a trip through your bank before it can buy a meter token. KWIQ has served more than 100,000 users since 2017, and the crypto-to-naira swap is free. Download the KWIQ app or create a free account on the web, and your next electricity payment is a few taps away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a prepaid token for someone else's meter?

Yes. You enter the meter number you're paying for, so it can be your parents' house or your shop. Check the number, and the customer name where your provider shows one, before you confirm.

Does KWIQ charge extra to pay electricity bills?

No. Swapping crypto to naira in KWIQ is free, and KWIQ adds no extra cost for electricity, airtime, data or betting top-ups.

Which electricity companies can I pay through KWIQ?

The app lists the distribution companies it supports when you go to pay. Look for your DisCo there before you swap a large amount.

What happens if I pay to the wrong meter number?

A token is tied to the meter it was bought for, so it won't load on yours, and a payment to the wrong meter may not be reversible. Contact KWIQ support straight away with the transaction reference.
