KWIQ vs KuCoin: Altcoin Exchange or Naira Off-Ramp?

· 5 min read

Short answer: KuCoin is a global crypto exchange known for listing a wide range of altcoins, while KWIQ is a Nigerian app for selling crypto for naira with zero fees on crypto-to-naira swaps. You can only sell a coin on KWIQ if the app has a wallet for it, so if your altcoin isn't supported, swap it to USDT or BTC on KuCoin first (KuCoin's own fees apply), then send it to KWIQ and sell.

Tunde bought a small token on KuCoin last year, mostly on a friend's tip, and mostly forgot about it. In April it tripled. School fees are due in September, and Tunde would like some of that profit in naira before the price changes its mind.

There's one snag. The token that made the money isn't one of the coins KWIQ buys.

That snag is the heart of KWIQ vs KuCoin. They aren't really rivals. They sit at two ends of the same trip, and the tricky part is the bridge between them.

The short version

KuCoin is for finding and trading altcoins. KWIQ is for turning crypto into naira. If your coin is one KWIQ supports, send it straight across and sell it for free. If it isn't, swap it on KuCoin into USDT or BTC first, then send that.

What each one is for

KuCoin is a global crypto exchange known for listing a wide range of altcoins, including newer and smaller tokens. People use it to hunt for coins early and to trade them. For its current fees, listings and availability, check KuCoin's own website.

KWIQ is a Nigerian app with wallets for 20+ coins, including BTC, USDT, ETH, USDC, SOL, BNB, TRX, LTC, DOGE and BCH. It's built for the cash-out end: swapping crypto to naira costs nothing, the app shows the rate and the naira amount before you confirm, and you can withdraw to any Nigerian bank account. It also buys gift cards and pays for airtime, data and bills from your naira balance.

Your route from altcoin to naira

Work through these four questions in order.

1. Does KWIQ have a wallet for your coin?

Open the KWIQ app and look for the coin among your wallets. If it's there, note which network its deposit address is for. Our guide on checking which coins and networks KWIQ accepts shows where to look.

2. If yes, send it as it is

Don't swap first. Selling a supported coin for naira on KWIQ is free, so any swap along the way only costs you. Withdraw from KuCoin to your KWIQ deposit address on the network the app shows.

3. If no, swap it on KuCoin

Trade your token for a coin KWIQ supports. KuCoin's trading fees apply, so check its current fee page. If the token has few buyers, you may also get a worse price than the chart suggests, especially on a large order. Our explainer on slippage covers why that happens.

4. Pick your bridge coin

For most people, USDT is the simplest bridge, because its value stays close to the US dollar while it's in transit. BTC works too, but its price can move between your swap and your sale, and Bitcoin network fees go up and down. Whichever you choose, send on the network KWIQ shows for that coin.

A worked example: don't swap twice

The numbers below are made up to show the maths. They aren't real prices, rates or fees from any platform.

Say Tunde's token is worth 600 USDT on KuCoin.

Route A: one swap. Tunde swaps the token for USDT on KuCoin, paying an imaginary 0.1% fee (0.6 USDT), then withdraws, paying an imaginary 1 USDT network fee. 598.4 USDT arrives in KWIQ. At an invented rate of ₦1,000 per USDT, and with no fee to sell for naira, Tunde receives ₦598,400.

Route B: one swap too many. Tunde swaps the token for BTC on KuCoin instead, sends the BTC to KWIQ, then swaps the BTC to USDT inside KWIQ before selling, out of habit. That extra crypto-to-crypto swap costs 2%, around 12 USDT on this amount, or about ₦12,000 at the invented rate. Selling the BTC directly for naira would have cost nothing.

The lesson: choose your bridge coin once, and sell that coin directly.

A few honest words about altcoins

Altcoin hunting can be exciting, and now and then very profitable. Many small tokens also fade after a burst of attention, and some go to zero. A profit on screen isn't money until you take it, which is why many people take some profit in stages instead of waiting for the exact top.

Before you buy the next one, run it through our 15-minute research checklist. And if anyone promises you a token will "100x by December", walk away. This is general information, not financial advice.

Moving funds from KuCoin to KWIQ

If your coins are in KuCoin's trading account, you may need to move them to the account it withdraws from first. Then withdraw to your KWIQ deposit address on the matching network, starting with a small test if the address is new to you. Our KuCoin to Nigerian bank guide walks through it, and the crypto address checker tells you which network an address belongs to before you paste it.

Once the deposit is confirmed, check the rate and naira amount, sell, and withdraw to your bank.

Checking the numbers yourself

Before you move anything, jot down four figures:

  • KuCoin's trading fee for your swap, from its fee page;
  • the withdrawal and network fee for the coin and network you'll use;
  • the naira amount KWIQ shows for what will actually arrive;
  • the same figure from any other route you're considering.

The last two are what matter. Pick the route that leaves the most naira in your bank, not the one with the prettiest headline rate.

When the next one pays off

You don't have to choose between hunting altcoins and paying school fees. It just helps to know exactly how you'll turn some of a winning token into naira before the day you need it. Download the KWIQ app to see your deposit addresses and the naira amount before you sell, or create a free account on the web if your phone has no room left.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell any coin from KuCoin on KWIQ?

Only coins KWIQ has a wallet for. KWIQ supports 20+ coins, including BTC, USDT, ETH, USDC, SOL, BNB, TRX, LTC, DOGE and BCH. Check the app for the full list before you send anything.

Should I swap to USDT or BTC before sending?

If naira is the goal, USDT is usually the simpler bridge because its value stays close to the dollar while it moves. BTC works too, but its price can change between your swap and your sale.

What if I send KWIQ a token it doesn't support?

Avoid it: sending a token to an address that wasn't made for it can mean losing it. If it has already happened, contact KWIQ support with the TXID straight away rather than sending anything else.

Does KWIQ charge to swap one coin for another?

Crypto-to-crypto swaps on KWIQ cost 2%. Selling crypto for naira is free, so if you hold a coin KWIQ supports, sell it directly instead of swapping first.
