Should I Sell My Bitcoin Now or Wait? A Decision Guide, Not a Prediction

· 2 min read

Short answer: Nobody can tell you whether Bitcoin's price will be higher next week, so don't decide on a prediction. Decide on your situation: what the money is for, when you need it, whether you'd be comfortable if the price fell by half, and whether selling part would settle your nerves. If you need naira soon, selling what you need now is usually wiser than hoping. KWIQ doesn't give investment advice; this is a way to think it through.

If you've ever typed "should I sell my Bitcoin now?" into Google, you'll have noticed the answers fall into two camps: people sure it's going up, and people sure it's going down. Neither knows. What you can know is your own situation, and that's usually enough to decide.

Five questions that decide it

Question If the answer is… It usually points to…
What is this money for? Rent, fees, a debt, a business Selling what you need
When do you need it? Within months Selling at least that part now
Could you live with the price halving? No Selling some, so you sleep at night
Why did you buy it? A long-term saving you still believe in Holding, with a plan
Would selling part settle you? Yes Selling a portion now and setting levels for the rest

The questions don't mention the price for a reason: your needs are certain, the price isn't.

Selling at a loss

What you paid is in the past, and the market doesn't know or care about it. If you need the money, holding a loss in the hope it recovers is a gamble with rent money. If you don't need it and still believe in holding, that's a different decision, and a legitimate one. Either way, keep a record of what you bought and sold; the crypto tax records spreadsheet makes it simple.

A middle path most people find easier

  1. Sell what you need now, so the bills aren't riding on the price.
  2. Decide levels in advance for the rest, for example "sell a quarter if it rises 20%".
  3. Use price alerts rather than watching charts.
  4. Write your plan down; it's much harder to panic against your own written plan.

Frequently asked questions

Should I sell my Bitcoin at a loss?

If you need the money, or you no longer believe in holding it, a loss doesn't get better by waiting just because it's a loss. The price you paid is in the past. Decide based on what you need now, and keep records, because losses can matter for tax.

Is it better to sell Bitcoin all at once or in parts?

Selling in parts spreads the risk of picking a bad moment, and it's often easier emotionally. Selling all at once is simpler if you need the full amount now. Many people sell what they need and keep the rest.

What's the best time of day to sell Bitcoin in Nigeria?

There's no reliable best hour. Check the live rate when you're ready, and set price alerts for levels you care about instead of watching charts all day.
