Cash App Bitcoin to Naira: How a Friend in the US Can Pay You

· 3 min read

Short answer: Cash App lets verified US users send Bitcoin to an outside Bitcoin address. Give your sender the Bitcoin deposit address from your KWIQ app, ask them to send on the regular Bitcoin network (not Lightning, unless your KWIQ deposit screen offers it), and once it's confirmed and credited, sell it for naira with zero conversion fees and withdraw to any Nigerian bank account.

Your friend in Atlanta wants to send you $200 for your birthday. Your client in New Jersey owes you for a logo. Both of them say the same thing: "I only use Cash App."

Cash App's ordinary money transfers don't reach Nigeria. But Cash App also lets people buy Bitcoin, and send that Bitcoin to an outside address. That outside address can be your Bitcoin wallet on KWIQ.

The route in one line

Sender buys Bitcoin in Cash App → sends it to your KWIQ Bitcoin address → you sell it for naira → you withdraw to your bank.

Your side: get the right address

  1. Open the KWIQ app and go to your Bitcoin (BTC) wallet.
  2. Tap deposit and copy your Bitcoin address.
  3. Send it to your friend with a clear note: "Bitcoin only, standard Bitcoin network (not Lightning)."

Why the note about Lightning? Cash App can send Bitcoin two ways: on the regular Bitcoin network, or on Lightning, a fast payment layer that uses invoices instead of normal addresses. Your KWIQ address is a regular Bitcoin address, so the regular network is the one to use unless your KWIQ deposit screen shows a Lightning option.

Bitcoin addresses usually start with 1, 3 or bc1. If you want to double-check an address before sharing it, our crypto address checker recognises Bitcoin formats.

Their side: sending from Cash App

The exact buttons change as Cash App updates, but the steps look like this:

  1. In Cash App, buy Bitcoin worth the amount they want to send, plus a little for the network fee if Cash App doesn't include it.
  2. Open the Bitcoin section and choose to send or withdraw Bitcoin.
  3. Paste your address. Cash App may ask them to scan or paste it.
  4. If asked for a speed, they choose one. Faster options cost more; slower ones can take longer to arrive.
  5. Confirm. Cash App may ask them to verify their identity before their first Bitcoin withdrawal.

For the first payment, ask them to send a small amount first. Once it lands, they send the rest.

When the Bitcoin arrives

The transfer has to be confirmed on the Bitcoin network before it's credited to your KWIQ wallet. You can follow it yourself: ask your friend for the transaction ID and paste it into a Bitcoin explorer such as mempool.space. If it seems stuck, our guide on unconfirmed Bitcoin transactions explains why.

Once it's credited:

  1. Choose how much to sell.
  2. See the rate and the exact naira amount.
  3. Confirm. Swapping Bitcoin to naira on KWIQ is free.
  4. Withdraw to any Nigerian bank account. Naira can arrive in just 4 seconds.

Mind the price

Bitcoin's price moves. If your friend sends "$200 of Bitcoin", the naira you get depends on the price when you sell, not when they sent it. Read what happens when Bitcoin's price changes during a transfer for the details. If you need the exact amount for a bill, sell soon after it's credited.

You can see where the price is now on the Bitcoin to naira rate page.

Safety notes

  • Only accept this from people you know or genuine clients. Scammers use Cash App too.
  • Never release goods based on a screenshot. Wait until the Bitcoin is credited to your wallet.
  • Ignore "send it back" requests. If someone "overpays" and asks for a naira refund, stop. It's a classic scam.

Other ways from the US

If your sender uses PayPal instead, see PayPal to naira with crypto. If they're happy to use a crypto exchange, USDT keeps a steady dollar value on the way: share our guide to sending USDT home. Everything else is on our page about receiving money from the USA in Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone send me money on Cash App in Nigeria?

Cash App's money transfers are built for people in the US, so a Nigerian can't usually receive Cash App dollars directly. Sending Bitcoin from Cash App to your own Bitcoin address is the workaround many people use.

What is the difference between Lightning and the regular Bitcoin network?

Lightning is a faster payment layer built on top of Bitcoin, and it uses invoices instead of normal addresses. Your KWIQ Bitcoin address is a regular on-chain address, so your sender should choose the standard Bitcoin network unless the KWIQ deposit screen shows a Lightning option.

Why does my sender need to verify their identity?

Cash App asks users to verify their identity before they can send Bitcoin outside the app. That's on their side; you don't need to do anything for it.

How long until I get the naira?

The Bitcoin has to be confirmed on the network and credited to your KWIQ wallet first, which often takes under an hour but depends on the fee and the speed your sender chose. Once you sell, naira can reach your bank in just 4 seconds.
