Gift Card to USDT: Can You Convert, and What's the Better Route?
· 4 min read
Short answer: A gift card can't be sent straight into a USDT wallet, because a card is a code and USDT lives on a blockchain. The route that works is two steps in the KWIQ app: sell the card for naira, then swap that naira to USDT. You see the card's rate before you trade, and you hold USDT afterwards.
Chidi has a $100 Apple card from his sister in Toronto. He doesn't need all of it as naira this week, and he'd like to keep part of it in dollars. A friend tells him to "convert the gift card to USDT". He searches for a site that does it in one go, and finds a lot of promises and not much clarity.
Here's the honest picture: there's no direct gift card to USDT transfer, and anyone claiming one deserves a second look. What you can do is simple, and it takes two steps.
Why you can't send a gift card straight to USDT
A gift card is a code held by the company that issued it. USDT is a token recorded on a blockchain such as TRON. Nothing connects the two. Someone has to buy the card, in naira, and someone has to sell you USDT.
That's why every real route has a middle step. On KWIQ the middle step is naira, and you can see the amounts at each stage.
How to turn a gift card into USDT on KWIQ
- Check that your card is accepted. The gift cards page lists the brands, and the gift card rate calculator lets you pick the card, type and value to see the naira amount. The app shows the final rate before you confirm.
- Sell the card in the app. Choose the card type that matches yours (for example the country and whether it's a physical card or an e-code), enter the value and follow the prompts. Our post on why gift card rates differ explains why the right type matters.
- Receive the naira in your KWIQ balance.
- Swap the naira to USDT. KWIQ confirms that naira from a gift card sale can be swapped to USDT in the app, so you don't need to withdraw to a bank and start again.
- Keep it, or send it on. The USDT sits in your KWIQ wallet. To send it to another wallet, copy that wallet's address and choose the matching network. How to check which coins and networks KWIQ accepts helps you pick correctly.
Naira, USDT or both?
Think about what the money is for before you swap.
| If you need | A sensible route |
|---|---|
| Rent, data, school fees this week | Take the naira, or sell your USDT for naira later |
| To keep value in dollars for a few months | Swap some or all of the naira to USDT |
| Bitcoin instead | See how to swap USDT for Bitcoin; crypto-to-crypto swaps cost 2% |
| A bit of both | Split the card's naira: spend part, swap part |
Keep in mind that each step has its own rate. The card is paid at the gift card rate, and the USDT is bought at the buying rate, which differs from the selling rate. Our explainer on buy rate vs sell rate shows why that gap exists. Don't expect $100 of card to become exactly 100 USDT.
What if people keep paying you in gift cards?
If it keeps happening, the cleaner fix is at the source. Ask the sender for USDT directly, with your deposit address and network. Paid in a gift card? What to ask for next time has a message you can copy, and gift cards vs crypto for receiving money from abroad compares the two honestly.
Protect yourself on the way
- Never redeem the card or share its code with anyone before you trade it, "to test it".
- Be wary of any site promising to pay USDT straight to a wallet for your card. You'd be handing over a code with no recourse. Gift card scams in Nigeria lists the usual tricks.
- Check the network on every USDT address before you send. USDT sent on the wrong network can be lost; here's what to do if it happens.
Where KWIQ fits
KWIQ buys gift cards for naira, pays naira to your bank, and lets you swap that naira to USDT. Every coin KWIQ has a wallet for can also be bought with naira in the app. KWIQ states no fee for buying crypto, so read the amount on the confirmation screen before you approve. The app also shows each card's rate before you trade. KWIQ operates in compliance with Nigerian regulations and works closely with exchanges approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria.
When you're ready, download the KWIQ app, or create a free account on the web.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a gift card directly to USDT?
Not as one blockchain transfer. A gift card is a code, and USDT is a token on a network such as TRON. On KWIQ you sell the card for naira first, and the naira from that sale can then be swapped to USDT in the app.
Which gift cards can I turn into USDT?
Any card KWIQ is buying. The app lists the card types it accepts with their rates, and our gift cards page shows the brands. If a card isn't listed, KWIQ isn't buying it at the moment.
Do I need a USDT wallet somewhere else first?
No. The USDT stays in your KWIQ wallet until you decide to send it somewhere. If you do want it elsewhere, you'll need the receiving address and the right network.
Is it better to get USDT or naira for a gift card?
It depends on what you need. Naira is for spending now. USDT is dollar-linked, so it suits money you want to keep in dollars for a while, though the swap and any later sale have their own rates.
Is there a fee for swapping gift card naira to USDT?
KWIQ doesn't state a fee for buying crypto with naira, so check the amount the app shows on the confirmation screen before you approve it.
