How to Swap USDT for Bitcoin (and Other Coins) in Nigeria
· 6 min read
You were paid in USDT, this month's bills are covered, and you'd like to put a little of what's left into Bitcoin for the long term. Or a client has sent USDC when everything else you hold is USDT. Either way, you don't need to sell to naira and then buy back in. You can swap one coin straight for another.
This guide explains what a crypto swap is, why people use them, how to do one in the KWIQ app and what it really costs, with simple numbers. It also covers the one situation where you shouldn't swap at all.
What is a crypto swap?
A swap trades one cryptocurrency directly for another. You give up some USDT and receive Bitcoin (or ETH, or USDC) in return, at the rate shown when you confirm. Naira never enters the picture.
Compare that with the long way round: sell USDT for naira, then use the naira to buy Bitcoin. That's two trades, two rates and more waiting, and the price can move in between. A swap does the job in one step.
Why people swap USDT for Bitcoin or other coins
Everyone's reasons are their own, but a few come up again and again:
- Long-term Bitcoin savings. Some people keep their working money in USDT, which is designed to stay close to the US dollar, and move a fixed slice into BTC each month as a long-term holding.
- Moving between stablecoins. You hold USDT but need USDC for a payment, or the other way round. Our USDT vs USDC guide explains how the two differ.
- Stepping back from volatility. The reverse swap, BTC into USDT, is how some holders reduce their exposure to big price swings without leaving crypto altogether.
- Paying in a specific coin. If someone asks to be paid in a particular coin, a swap gets you there without a detour through your bank.
How to swap USDT for Bitcoin on KWIQ
KWIQ gives you your own wallets for more than 20 coins, including BTC, USDT, ETH, USDC, BNB, SOL, TRX, LTC and DOGE, so you can swap inside the app without sending your coins anywhere else. In general terms, it works like this:
- Open your USDT wallet in the KWIQ app, or the wallet for whichever coin you're swapping from.
- Choose swap.
- Pick the coin you want, for example Bitcoin. The app shows the coins you can swap to.
- Enter the amount and review it. Check how much of the new coin you'll receive before you go any further.
- Confirm the swap.
If your USDT is on another exchange or in another wallet, send it to your KWIQ USDT address first. You can receive crypto from anywhere in the world, but always use the exact network your deposit screen shows.
KWIQ works on Android, iPhone and the web, so if your phone is short on storage you can also sign in from your browser.
What a swap costs: a worked example
Crypto-to-crypto swaps on KWIQ cost 2% of the amount you swap. Here's what that looks like with round numbers, before any price movement:
| You swap | 2% swap fee | Value that goes into BTC |
|---|---|---|
| 50 USDT | 1 USDT | about 49 USDT |
| 100 USDT | 2 USDT | about 98 USDT |
| 500 USDT | 10 USDT | about 490 USDT |
| 1,000 USDT | 20 USDT | about 980 USDT |
So if you swap 100 USDT, about 98 USDT worth of Bitcoin reaches you. To turn that into a BTC figure, divide by Bitcoin's dollar price at the time. Purely as an illustration, if Bitcoin were priced at $100,000, 98 USDT would buy 0.00098 BTC, which is 98,000 satoshis. Our satoshi converter does that maths for you, in sats, bitcoin, naira or dollars.
Watch out for round trips
The fee applies every time you swap, in either direction. Swap 100 USDT to BTC and straight back again, and if the price hasn't moved you'd end up with about 96 USDT (98, minus 2% of 98). Swapping back and forth whenever the market twitches eats into your money quickly, so make each swap a deliberate decision.
If you want naira, don't swap first
This is one of the easiest ways to lose money without noticing. Say you hold Bitcoin and need naira for rent. It can feel tidy to swap BTC to USDT first and then sell the USDT. But that swap costs 2%, and you don't need it.
On KWIQ, selling crypto for naira is free. So go straight from the coin you hold to naira: sell Bitcoin for naira directly. The app shows the rate and the naira amount before you confirm, and you can withdraw to any Nigerian bank account. Check the live Bitcoin to naira rate beforehand if you want to see where it stands.
A simple rule of thumb:
- Your goal is naira: sell directly. It's free.
- Your goal is a different coin: swap. It costs 2%.
Risks to weigh before you swap
Doing a swap is easy. Deciding whether to swap is the harder part.
- Bitcoin is volatile. USDT is designed to stay close to $1; Bitcoin isn't. Your 98 USDT worth of BTC could be worth noticeably more or less within days.
- Prices move constantly. The amount you'd receive can change between checking and confirming, so look at the figure again right before you tap confirm.
- Keep bill money out of it. Rent, school fees and emergency money shouldn't sit in a coin that can drop 20% in a week. Our guide on protecting your money when crypto prices swing shows a simple way to keep them apart.
- Know your numbers. If you build up BTC over months, keep track of what you paid. The crypto profit calculator shows your profit or loss and break-even price.
- Stablecoins carry risk too. USDT and USDC depend on their issuers keeping the link to the dollar. They usually move far less than Bitcoin, but they aren't guaranteed.
This guide is general information, not financial advice. Crypto prices move, and nobody can promise where Bitcoin goes next, so weigh any swap against your own situation and goals.
A few habits that help
- Decide before you open the app. How much, how often and why. A plan stops a sudden price move from making the decision for you.
- Be consistent if you're saving long term. Many long-term savers swap a fixed amount on a schedule rather than trying to time the market.
- Keep a simple record. Note the date, the amount you swapped and the amount you received.
- Protect your account. KWIQ never asks for your password, PIN or one-time codes, so anyone who does isn't from KWIQ. Our support team is available 24/7 through live chat in the app and on kwiq.app.
Swap or cash out from one app
KWIQ has served more than 100,000 users since 2017. Whether you want to move between coins or sell straight to naira for free, it all happens in one place. Download the KWIQ app or create a free account on the web, and make your first swap when your plan says it's time.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to swap 100 USDT to BTC on KWIQ?
Crypto-to-crypto swaps on KWIQ cost 2%, so 2 USDT of a 100 USDT swap goes on the fee and about 98 USDT worth of Bitcoin reaches you, before any price movement.
Is it cheaper to swap my Bitcoin to USDT before selling for naira?
No. Selling crypto for naira on KWIQ is free, while a crypto-to-crypto swap costs 2%. If naira is the goal, sell the coin you already hold directly.
Can I swap my Bitcoin back to USDT later?
Yes, but that's another crypto-to-crypto swap, so it costs 2% as well, and Bitcoin's price may have moved since your first swap. Going back and forth often adds up.
Do I have to send my USDT to another exchange to swap it?
Not if it's already in your KWIQ wallet. You can swap inside the app. If your USDT is elsewhere, send it to your KWIQ USDT address first, on the exact network your deposit screen shows.
