Zelle, Venmo and Cash App: Which US Apps Can Send You Crypto?

· 3 min read

Short answer: Zelle can't send money to Nigeria and doesn't handle crypto. Cash App lets verified US users send Bitcoin to an outside address, and PayPal and Venmo let eligible US users transfer a few coins, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, to outside wallets. Your US sender can use one of those to send crypto to your KWIQ wallet, or buy USDT on a US crypto exchange, and you sell it for naira. Features change, so they should check the app's own help pages.

"Do you have Zelle?" If you've ever had a friend, relative or client in the US offer to send you money, you've probably heard it. And the answer for someone in Nigeria is almost always: "No, and I can't."

The good news is that the apps Americans use every day aren't all dead ends. Here's which ones can get money to you, and how.

The quick comparison

US app Can it reach you in Nigeria? How
Zelle No It only moves money between US bank accounts, and doesn't handle crypto
Cash App Yes, via Bitcoin Verified users can send Bitcoin to an outside Bitcoin address
PayPal Yes, via crypto (eligible US users) Buy a supported coin in PayPal and transfer it to an outside wallet
Venmo Yes, via crypto (eligible US users) Similar to PayPal: buy a supported coin and transfer it out
A US crypto exchange Yes Buy USDT and withdraw it to your address

All of these change from time to time. Ask your sender to check the app's own help pages for what's available on their account.

Zelle: not an option

Zelle is a bank-to-bank service inside the US. It's fast and popular for paying rent or splitting dinner, but it can't send money abroad and has no crypto feature. If your sender only has Zelle, they'll need to use one of the routes below instead.

Cash App: Bitcoin

Cash App lets verified users buy Bitcoin and send it to an outside address. Your sender should use the regular Bitcoin network, not Lightning, unless your KWIQ deposit screen shows a Lightning option. Our full walk-through is in Cash App Bitcoin to naira.

PayPal and Venmo: a few coins

PayPal and Venmo (which PayPal owns) let eligible US users buy a small number of coins, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and transfer them to outside wallets. The steps for PayPal are in PayPal to naira with crypto; Venmo's are similar.

Only ask for a coin that the KWIQ app lists, and give your sender the deposit address for that exact coin. A Bitcoin address won't accept Ethereum, and the other way round.

The best option if they're willing: USDT from an exchange

Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin can move in price between when your friend sends and when you sell. That's fine for a gift, less fine for an invoice. If your sender is happy to open an account on a regulated US crypto exchange, USDT is usually the better choice: it's designed to stay at about one dollar, and it's cheap to send on TRON or BNB Smart Chain. Share our guide for sending USDT to Nigeria with them.

What you need to send them

Whatever they choose, send them three things:

  1. The coin: for example, "Bitcoin (BTC)".
  2. Your address for that coin, copied from your KWIQ wallet.
  3. The network, written in plain words, for example "regular Bitcoin network, not Lightning" or "TRON (TRC20)".

And ask for a small test the first time.

When it arrives

Once the crypto is confirmed and credited, sell it in the KWIQ app: you see the rate and the naira amount before you confirm, and swapping to naira is free. If you're selling Bitcoin, remember the price may have moved since your friend sent it; here's why.

For every route from America in one place, see receiving money from the USA in Nigeria. Then download the KWIQ app so your addresses are ready, or create an account on the web.

Frequently asked questions

Can I receive Zelle in Nigeria?

No. Zelle moves money between US bank accounts. To pay you in Nigeria, your sender needs a different route, such as sending crypto from an app or exchange that supports it.

Which is best for sending to Nigeria: Cash App, PayPal or Venmo?

Whichever your sender already uses and has verified. All three can send Bitcoin to an outside wallet at the time of writing. If they're willing to open a crypto exchange account, USDT is usually better because its value stays close to one dollar.

What coin should my US friend send?

One that KWIQ supports and that their app can send, on the network shown with your KWIQ deposit address. Bitcoin works from all three apps; Litecoin is often cheaper to send where it's available.

How do I get the naira?

Once the crypto is confirmed and credited to your KWIQ wallet, sell it in the app at the rate shown, with zero conversion fees, and withdraw to any Nigerian bank account.
