What is dollar-cost averaging (DCA)?
DCA means buying a fixed amount at regular times, for example ₦20,000 every month, whatever the price. When prices are low your money buys more coins, and when they’re high it buys fewer. Over time your average price smooths out the ups and downs, and you avoid trying to time the market.
It doesn’t remove risk: if the price ends up lower than your average, you’re at a loss. It just makes the path less stressful for many people.
How the average price is worked out
For each buy, coins bought = amount spent ÷ price. Your average price = total spent ÷ total coins. It is not the simple average of the prices, because you buy more coins when the price is lower.
Example: ₦50,000 at ₦100,000,000 per BTC buys 0.0005 BTC, and ₦50,000 at ₦80,000,000 buys 0.000625 BTC. You spent ₦100,000 for 0.001125 BTC, an average of about ₦88,888,889, lower than the simple average of ₦90,000,000.
